RECENT NEWS
EPA’s 2019 Children’s Health Month Highlights. EPA celebrated the successful completion of Children’s Health Month 2019 after conducting a number of key activities that support the agency’s commitment to protecting children where they live, learn and play. “I am proud of the work we continue to accomplish to protect children’s health across the country,” said EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler. “From proposing the first revisions to the lead and copper rule in nearly three decades to announcing $10 million in funding to replace old school buses, the Trump Administration is making tremendous progress toward protecting the most vulnerable among us from environmental hazards.” Throughout October, EPA released key reports and updates, and EPA officials hosted on-the-ground events celebrating Children’s Health Month in all ten EPA Regions.

Proposed Updates to Lead and Copper Rule to Better Protect Children and At-Risk Communities. As part of Children’s Health Month, EPA announced a proposed rule that significantly improves the actions water systems must take to reduce lead in the nation’s drinking water, the first major overhaul of the Lead and Copper Rule since 1991. “Today, the Trump Administration is delivering on its commitment to ensure all Americans have access to clean drinking water by proposing the first major overhaul of the Lead and Copper Rule in over two decades,” said Administrator Wheeler. “By improving protocols for identifying lead, expanding sampling, and strengthening treatment requirements, our proposal would ensure that more water systems proactively take actions to prevent lead exposure, especially in schools, child care facilities, and the most at-risk communities.”

EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler Releases the Seventh Update to the Administrator’s Superfund Emphasis List, Helping to Accelerate Progress at Sites Across the Country. EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler announced the seventh update to the Administrator’s Emphasis List of Superfund Sites Targeted for Immediate, Intense Action. “All Americans deserve timely action on Superfund site cleanups in their communities – not delays,” said Wheeler. “We will continue to advance or accelerate Superfund cleanups across the country by addressing issues that cause site-specific delays.” Since the creation of the Administrator’s Emphasis List in 2017, 16 sites have been removed from the list after achieving critical milestones causing delays or solving other issues slowing the pace of cleanup.

Remember: Lead-Safe Work. If you’re planning to have work done on your home, look for contractors certified for lead-safe renovation. Lead paint is the main way people are exposed to lead in the U.S. now and lead exposure can cause a range of serious health problems, and especially puts young children and their developing nervous systems at the greatest risk. EPA has fined contractors who violated lead-safe work practices that are designed to prevent or reduce lead hazards from renovation or home repair activities.
